How to castrate the hives and increase them. Is accurate to give a slight explanation of how to prepare the cork (hive drawer) for the planting or increasing (division) ... You take an empty cork, clean it inside and out, you adjust both covers; if there are pepper or snuff leaves, they’re squeezed inwardly in order to aromatize the cork, and if no you can use any other aromatic; but if there weren’t, cleaning it would be enough; then you cover the hole in the middle where the bees have to exit and enter; you put dust in one head and the other is left open; and this is how it is placed on the right side of castrating (honey harvest); so from the seat, without violence, the hand reaches the hand the cork’s mouth to be planted; it will have the head up and a cap, either made of straw or linen (cloth) to keep out bees that have been put; must have a castrating knife that does not pass a tierce or have less than a quarter, and a common machete to open the lids. Then, with everything prepared, the castrate begins put the cork that will be castrated in the machine. A head is uncovered; the castrating should be warned to look before it before slipping out, if it’s covered of bees, because those are the surplus and in position to form a new home a removing the lid,. In this case, the ends of the cover are docked; it’s carried carefully to the mouth of the cork that will be planted; it’s given a hit in the same mouth, so that with one hit all the bees come off and go to the center of the cork; then you put the cap to prevent them to exit. This operation is done in all the caps of the corks being castrated; usually a head of the cork is made of honey or sweet potato (pollen) and the other of children (breeding). To know when they are ready to be planted, it must be observed between the hives which one is close to sprout, what is known in the brown and transparent filmy covering the head of the little cartridges where the bees are, and even with the naked eye the movement to make out of their cells is noted. Some of these hives are carefully released without breaking them off and move them to the new cork, trying not to spoil it by placing it in the center of the cork horizontally, observe as it was in the position it was taken. The same operation is repeated for all the corks where there are children in season, until you notice that the new cork has enough bees or children to form the new room. In this state you are putting the top, cover with dust, and separate aside. It gets another to continue, trying not to move the new planting to prevent new hives which are still loose, to clutter and bees from spoiling. The periods of castrating are not yet certain, because these depend on the season. When this is flower abundant, are usually made up to three castrations, one every two months in the period of flowers; but usually there are three castrations in a year. The method I have observed and I find infallible when it warns there’s no struggle between bees, a row is opened to see if it is full, being full it is continuous at any time. It is noted that in all the castrates can be planted more or less depending on the abundance of bees and children in season. |
Fuente: La apicultura yucateca. Desde los mayas hasta 1960. Ruy M. N. |
